Solid Fill
The Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA) is now accepting brick, concrete, and concrete (cinder) blocks at its Landfill facility on Dubuque’s west side free of charge. The materials will be recycled by the Agency’s staff into road rock, which will then be used on site. Anyone wishing to dispose of the noted materials should contact Agency staff at 557-8820 or 557-1838 regarding what can and cannot be accepted. Solid Fill materials must be identified at the scale before unloading. Concrete with re-rod will not be accepted. Disposal guidelines are available by request and for download.
Asbestos
You may dispose of asbestos at the landfill. Asbestos must be wet before being handled. Double-bag the wet materials. Asbestos is only taken after 3:30 on Tuesdays. You must make an appointment with the landfill scale house by calling 557-8220. You will need to supply your address and pay a fee for disposal.
Sharps
Needles used to administer medication require special disposal. The safest way to dispose of sharps is to take them to the Regional Collection Center for Household Hazardous Materials. Please call 589-1720 to make an appointment. There is no charge for Dubuque and Delaware County households and farms. Sharps should be placed in a rigid plastic container with the lid taped securely and labeled that it contains sharps.
Industrial Special Waste
Industries generating contaminated wastes must obtain a Special Waste Authorization (SWA) from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in Des Moines at 515-281-7982 before being allowed to dispose of such wastes at our landfill.
