What Are Your Appliances Costing You?
With a Kill A Watt Meter, you can learn not only how much electricity each of your household appliances uses, but how much electricity each appliance continues to use even when turned off (phantom loads). Now, through the combined efforts of the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency and area libraries, you can measure the energy used by each of your appliances with a Kill A Watt Meter available for check-out from one of the following locations: • Dubuque County Library – Asbury Branch, 5900 Saratoga Road, Phone: 563-582-0008 • Dubuque County Library – Epworth Branch, 110 Bierman Road SE, Phone: 563-876-3388 • Dubuque County Library – Farley Branch, 205 First Street NE, Phone: 563-744-3577 • Dubuque County Library – Holy Cross Branch, 938 First Street, Phone: 563-870-2082 • James Kennedy Public Library – 320 First Ave East, Dyersville, Phone: 563-875-8912 Simply plug the meter into any 120V electrical outlet and then plug your appliance into the meter. The meter will display how much electricity is being consumed, regardless of whether the appliance is turned on or off. The meter automatically calculates voltage, amperage, wattage, run time and total kilowatt-hours of electricity consumed, allowing you to identify which appliances are costing you the most to run and helping you save money. The meter comes complete with operating instructions and methods to calculate the cost of energy consumed by the appliance once the kilowatt-hour measurement is obtained. Meters are available for residents to check-out for up to one week with a $10 refundable deposit.
